What does it mean to look after yourself?

Staying healthy in a world moving faster than ever is tricky enough, but neglecting yourself will not only have an impact on your health, but on all other aspects of your life.

Your health – both mental and physical – are still of vital importance, even when it feels like the world is spinning too fast to get a handle on them. Here are a few tips on how to look after yourself:

  • Live Physically Healthy Eat healthy fresh foods, exercise regularly (this could mean going for a 20 minute walk) and drink plenty of water (at least 2 litres a day)

  • Live Mentally Healthy Living a physically healthy life is conductive of a mentally healthy life. It is important to think positively. Ask yourself, is there another, more positive way of looking at this problem? We've written an article deepening the mental health discussion if you feel like reading more on the topic.

  • Find ways to relax Contrary to most people's belief's, relaxing is just as important as doing. Activities like meditation, yoga, getting a massage, taking a bath or walking in the woods have a positive effect on your mind and body.

  • Practice good hygiene.  Good hygiene is important for social, medical, and psychological reasons in that it not only reduces the risk of illness, but it also improves the way others view you and how you view yourself. Not only will this help to activate a healthier life, but it will start a virtuous circle to a happier life.

  • Meet up with friends  Having a social life doesn't necessarily mean going out all the time, or being the life of the party. Not everyone is wired the same way. Equally, if you current friends are not inspiring you to feel good, then maybe it's time to make new friends. Consider joining a group to make new friends.

  • Do something you enjoy every day.  We are all different, so pick the thing/s you like doing the most. It doesn't mean spending money, but if there is something that you really enjoy doing that requires a little spending, don't hesitate to do it. The mental health rewards are beyond the price-tag. Dancing, watching a favourite TV show, working in the garden, painting or reading could help you clear your mind and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Always think about what makes you feel good, and the rest will follow. You can also read our article on mental health for a few tips on being 'mentally healthy '
